Malibu Filming Locations

Location Library

Malibu is where Los Angeles productions go for the ocean. We represent 160+ film-ready locations along the Pacific Coast Highway and up into the canyons: oceanfront beach houses, glass moderns hanging above the water, working ranches, and estates that put the coastline behind every window. The inventory runs from Carbon Beach out past Point Dume, all photographed and verified by our team.

The draw is light and horizon. Marine haze burns off by mid-morning, the afternoon sun comes straight off the water, and a single wide shot sells the California coast better than any set build. Filming here is permitted through the City of Malibu, and most properties are a straight run up PCH from Santa Monica, so the company move is simpler than the address suggests. Send us the boards and we will match the stretch of coast to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to film in Malibu?

Yes. Malibu is its own city and issues its own film permits, separate from Los Angeles and FilmLA. Beach and coastal work can involve additional agencies depending on the exact spot, and we walk productions through what a given property needs when you book.

How much does it cost to rent a Malibu location?

Rates track the property, not the zip code. A canyon ranch and an oceanfront modern price very differently, so send an inquiry from any listing and we will quote it for your dates and shoot type.

What kinds of locations does Malibu offer?

Oceanfront beach houses, glass moderns above the water, ranches in the canyons, and full estates. The mix runs from barefoot casual to architectural showpiece.

How far is Malibu from Los Angeles?

The eastern end starts just past Santa Monica on the Pacific Coast Highway, and the far end at Point Dume and beyond adds another half hour. Most crews treat it as a normal LA shoot day with a longer drive, and many properties hold enough on-site parking to keep the footprint simple.

Can you actually film on the beach?

Often, yes, with the right permits for the stretch of sand involved. Several of our beachfront properties include private or direct beach access, which keeps the shot and the basecamp on one permit story. Ask us about the specific frame you need.

When is the best light in Malibu?

Late morning through sunset. Marine layer is common at dawn, especially in early summer, and it usually burns off by mid-morning. Golden hour over the water is the shot most productions come for, so schedules here often run late rather than early.
